We are located on the 9th floor of the Medical Sciences Building, in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta. Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art cell culture, biochemistry and molecular biology facilities. Other research cores available to us are:

  • lipid analysis facility equipped with HPLC and GC
  • cell imaging facility which offers state-of-the-art confocal, spinning disk and two-photon microscopes
  • flow cytometry facility equipped with two FacsScan, FacsCalibur, FacsCanto and FacsAria flow cytometers
  • proteomics facility equipped with MALDI-TOF MS/MS.

Techniques used in the lab:

  • Cell culture (human and mouse cell lines, primary neurons and astrocytes, fibroblasts from HD patients)
  • Cell transfection (Amaxa electroporation, liposome-mediated etc.)
  • Gene cloning and molecular biology
  • Real-time PCR, RT-PCR
  • Confocal microscopy/Immunocytochemistry
  • Flow cytometry
  • In-cell western
  • Cell fractionation
  • Immunoblotting, immunoprecipitation
  • In vivo studies in transgenic models of HD
  • Intra-cerebroventricular drug infusion
  • Motor behavior tests
  • Lipid analysis by TLC and GC analysis
